Canzun dil Bau (2019/2020)
5 channel sound installation and round table
This sound installation is inspired by the Swiss mountain village Vrin (Val Lumzezia) and the slow process of finding an access to the place and the people living there. The five village wells have played an important role within that process and are represented in the installation by 5 loudspeakers. On site as well as in the installation they acoustically define the space and ones own position within. Only after a while their acoustic individuality and sophistication can be perceived. Little by little the whole village seems to resonate in their polyphonic, obstinate chorale. The installation furthermore takes up the folk song “Canzun dil Bau” (“Song of the Beetle”), which is well-known in the region.
It is about a shiny beetle that is proudly walking through the village while arrogantly watching the farmers at work until suddenly it comes to a tragic end when it's run over by a plough. The position as an artist who tries to get an idea of the place and the people by observing them has ironically shown parallels. Hopefully they could be broken during the process. In the end, it is about an encounter at eye level and the potential of the allegedly banal and “ethnic”. The exhibition also included an open regulars’ table (meisa rotunda), during which the eponymous folk song was sung.
